What is it all about, then?
With a contemporary sensibility, Dottie-may Aston, paints timeless fables. Presenting gagged stags and elephants on the dial, her proudest works are rich with humor. While it may be intended to elicit amusement, their unsettling undertones invite a more profound reflection. A pivotal example is the transformation of the classic tale of the tortoise and the hare into the oil painting “Winning the Race?”, where the freshwater reptile trundles toward the sea, an invitation to contemplate the true nature of victory. Beneath the muted aesthetic lies a provocative dimension, the painter claims it is unavoidable when wearing your heart on the sleeve to find a few shreds of thread in the pigment. Keep an eye out for the next allegorical landscape; she’s promised pigs with wings.

Shop girl by day, painter by night, I was born in the year the world was meant to end, 2000, in the beautiful civil parish of the Forest of Dean. I spent a short part of my childhood there before my upbringing became nomadic, and now, for the longest period of time I’ve been living anywhere, I’ve been on Anglesey, which is known as the mother of Wales. I didn’t go to high school or college. I decided to get a part-time job to rent studio space and create art, and then I decided to give it a try, applying to Aberystwyth University, from which I graduated in 2021. Now I work just as I did before university, where I worked to pay for the paint, living to paint.

Your communication through your Art is so delicate and thoughtful…makes me feel so…I don’t know…words are funny things, aren’t they…makes me feel something private, deep down inside me 💜

Hello Joanna, thank you for sharing your thoughts! Yes, words are funny things, but the way you’ve used them is really moving!
Most of the time I’m not sure why I paint.. sometimes, I think, I’m doing it because I’m in pursuit of answers, but I’m also looking for questions… I guess, what I’m trying to explain can’t be done thorough words and that’s why I paint\sculpt them? x
